(www.blogher.com), one of the top women's online networks and the Web's number-one guide to blogs by women, today announced the launch of a fundraising initiative for maternal health projects via the GlobalGiving Web site that will culminate on Mother's Day, May 11. BlogHers Act is a global activism initiative driven by BlogHer community focusing on diverse aspects of maternal health, and the GlobalGiving program is a key component in this year-long initiative designed to make a difference in maternal health worldwide.
"Our partnership with GlobalGiving is an example of how social media is driving a radical shift in the way people think, act and associate with one another," said Lisa Stone, co-founder and CEO of BlogHer. "The BlogHer community has become a powerful forum for raising awareness and effecting positive change. We are pleased to work with such an amazing non-profit network to extend our ability to make an impact globally and continue our efforts to save women's lives."
The initiative launched by BlogHer will feature five projects from the GlobalGiving Network focusing on the most crucial issues in global maternal health for which the BlogHer community will raise money, including: * Improving education for young girls in Burkina Faso * Empowering HIV positive women in South Africa * Ensuring appropriate healthcare for displaced refugees in Darfur * Funding a mother and child health clinic in rural Nepal * Helping Afghan women with pre- and post-natal care BlogHer's contributing editors will be blogging about each of the five projects on the BlogHer network and encouraging support and donations from the community and beyond. BlogHer will follow the progress of the initiative on its site (http://www.blogher.com/bloghers-act-donate-now-save-womens-lives) through Mother's Day on May 11, 2008.
"GlobalGiving connects organizations with world-changing ideas to those who can support them, and BlogHer's community of more than eight million women is a powerful force," said Mari Kuraishi, co-founder of GlobalGiving. "Maternal health is a critical issue in developing countries and we are thrilled that BlogHer has chosen to support five projects across the GlobalGiving network.
