Announcing Non-Profit Hobo Tech Foundation

Portland, Oregon (PRWEB) May 29, 2008 -- The Hobo project has formally announced the launch of the Hobo Tech Foundation, a new independent non-profit organization which will coordinate the open source program of the Hobo rapid development toolkit for Ruby on Rails. The Foundation, which has secured seed support from Barquin International of Washington, DC, will be home to the growing core Hobo development team, and will also guide partnership opportunities for Hobo in the open source community in general.

Tom Locke, the creator of Hobo, will continue to focus on the core development work of Hobo and is joined by Dr Nic Williams, a well known member of the Ruby on Rails community. The Foundation is also charged with supporting and growing the global community of Hobo developers, and will provide direct technical support to the increasing number of Hobo based web projects.

"We're really excited that Barquin International has come on-board as a seed sponsor of the Hobo Tech Foundation," says Locke, "There are so many exciting things we want to do with the platform, and their support will allow us to push the project forward much faster. It's also great news to have such a dynamic personality as Dr Nic on the team, as it means we'll be able to build out our community effort more effectively too."

Since its launch in November 2006, the Hobo extension for Rails has been deployed in diverse web projects across the world, both for simple web services such as Favebot (www.favebot.com) and in more complex full-blown applications such as Beanbag (www.beanbaglearning.com) and La Magia (www.lamagia.co.uk). The speed of development and powerful customization options that Hobo provides make it very easy to produce sophisticated applications in a fraction of the time it would normally take. The plan is now to accelerate the roll out of new components and actively recruit more members for the core development team to meet the growing demand for Hobo features.

"This is the first time in over a decade I have been excited about the potential in a new development framework," explains Owen Dall, Chief Systems Architect for Barquin International, "Although Hobo is already a brilliant and significant enhancement to Rails, we are looking forward to the great leap forward we know is coming in the next few months. Our team is rapidly ramping up our development with Hobo and we hope to provide input and a solid testing ground for new features going forward."
